Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf: long name, great food

I’m a huge theatre fan. And there’s few places that know how to put a play together quite like Sydney Theatre Company. In addition to staging some world class productions that give London’s West End and New York’s Broadway a run for their money,  they also consistently collaborate with Australian acting royalty in the likes of Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving.

IMG_0878Apart from hosting quality theatre, they also have a great little place to have a drink and a feed called Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf, a classy but laid back place with million dollar views of Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge. I love the atmosphere and I love the views but in my years of patronage, I’ve never actually tried the food.

Until now.

Given this place is at Dawes Point, it’s about a 10-15 minute walk through the backstreets from Wynyard Station. Just far enough away from everything to make you choose another place. But when you add it on to watching a theatre production, it’s absolutely perfect. Arriving an hour before our show, the food journey began.

We ordered two dishes. The Lamb and the Chicken. The lamb was juicy, tender and incredibly flavoursome. Accompanied by a generous serving of greens, it made me feel less guilty about devouring such rich flavours.

Crispy Middle Eastern Spiced Chicken, Toum, Wilted Spinach

The chicken was also well cooked, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and buzzing with middle eastern flavours. These dishes were clearly thought out and worked by building on different textures and flavours.

This place has the right balance of atmosphere, iconic Sydney views and now I can confirm, outstanding food too. With many more mouthwatering dishes on the menu, I’ll definitely be back soon.

And on a final note, I have a little secret to share with you. From now until the end of October 2015, all food ordered after 8pm Mon-Thu is half price. You can count on me having a late dinner or two!
